WHAT DOES A MAKEUP TRIAL LOOK LIKE WITH JOHANNA COVELL?
Expect a lot of questions to be asked when we meet. I try to be as detailed as possible when it comes to creating a look you will be absolutely happy with. It is always helpful to bring images of the looks that you like and feel inspired by. Checking the latest looks from some recent red-carpet events, such as film festivals or awards ceremonies, is always a good idea.
It’s good to wear a plain white or off-white top that will reflect the color on your face to envision how your makeup will look against your wedding dress.
During the makeup trial we will look at images that you can be inspired by and discuss the style of makeup you like, the makeup you wear on a daily basis, and the makeup you wear on special occasions. We will also evaluate the condition of your skin and discuss a skincare routine and any concerns you may have. I am not a skincare specialist, but I can point you in the right direction and let you know if I think you should see a specialist to help you with your skincare.
The makeup trial takes up to 2 hours, during which we will perfect the look you want for your wedding. If you are planning a day wedding with an evening reception and would like to touch up the makeup yourself, we can extend the session so I can show you how to transform your look from day to night.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE TRIAL?
I will document the session by writing down the products used and taking a couple of portraits. I always take notes and do a face chart, because it is very helpful on the wedding day to recreate the look we agree on. Feedback after the trial is one of the most important parts for me. I want to be sure that my brides are 100% happy with the look. The wedding day is your day, and it is all about celebrating you, your partner, and your love for each other. I truly believe that every bride should feel the most spectacular, desirable, beautiful version of herself on her big day. A timeless look will survive the passage of time! You will always be able to look back at the pictures and feel the joy of your wedding day over and over again!
TRIAL PREPARATION TIPS
There is so much to think about when it comes to planning a wedding. Here are my top five tips for brides-to-be when it comes to creating YOUR dream wedding look!
It’s never too early to look after your skin – Try to develop a good skincare routine before your wedding. Once you develop a good routine, it will stay with you forever. If you don’t know where to start, ask professionals for advice. A well-hydrated, exfoliated, moisturized skin will be a great canvas for beautiful makeup.
Get recommendations – Once you have your wedding date, ask your friends if they have any wedding looks that were particularly memorable. You can also ask for a recommendation from your makeup artist or other wedding suppliers, such as wedding planners, photographers, florists, and caterers. The wedding industry is very supportive, and chances are that if you like one person’s style they can recommend you to someone with a similar work ethic and aesthetic.
Get inspired, but be yourself – Instagram, Pinterest, Red Carpet events; there are beauty looks everywhere to inspire you, and that’s great! What you need to remember is that every one of those looks has been created for an individual person with different facial features than yours. We all are unique in a specific way, and your wedding look should be too.
Do not skip the trial – You wouldn’t skip the wedding dress fitting after all! The main reason for doing a makeup trial is to create the perfect look for your wedding day and make it error-free. It is also a chance to meet your makeup artist in person and start to click. This will be one of the people with whom you spend the blissful hours before you go down the aisle, so you want to make sure that time is joyful and stress-free.
Have a wow moment with your look – The wedding makeup should feel like your second skin, not a mask. I don’t mean the amount of makeup or the foundation coverage. I want my brides to feel like they have just come back from their holiday; happy, relaxed, and the best version of themselves!
